MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is in a budget crunch.
Sheriff Cecil Cantrell tells WCBI they had to make several cuts to work under the perimeters given to them by the Board of Supervisors.
Because of the cuts, the department had to lay off four employees. In addition, they’re also cutting back approximately 10 cars a day.
“We’re going to be taking cars off the road at a time where I don’t think we need to be taking cars off the road. Matter of fact, I think we should be adding cars to the road, but we can’t buy gas for these cars and keep up with our budget and where it needs to be . I think it’s a bad thing, but, i’m going to make these cuts to stay within our budget perimeters. I think it’s wrong, but at the same time, it’s something that we’ve got to do,” said Sheriff Cantrell.
Sheriff Cantrell wants to reassure people that the department will still run effectively despite the cuts.
