BECKER, Miss. (WCBI) — A Monroe County church is commemorating 100 years of worship and service in the community.
Becker Baptist Church was packed with members and visitors who came out to celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary. Nita Hill is Becker’s oldest, living member and says she can recall when the church was a four room building.
“When I first came to Becker it was this wooden structure here. Wide open, it had two rooms on the side and two in the back but it had no doors,” says Hill.
She says though the Church started small, they never let that stop them from praising the Lord.
“Had Sunday school classes. Everybody talked at once except the ones in the auditorium. We still worshiped. I still remember it but we’ve come a long way,” says Hill.
Today Becker’s Church campus has a sanctuary and auditorium building. Randy Spencer has been Pastor for six years and says the members make Becker Baptist Church special.
“They’re just some good, Godly country folks who love the Lord and I feel privileged to be a part of this,” says Pastor Spencer.
Even the next generation agrees that Becker Baptist Church is a community melting pot.
“I like that I know everybody here and that everybody is like family and it’s just fun,” says 11-year old Natalie Pinkerton.
The church now has over 100 members. After service, Becker Baptist Church ended their week long celebration with Sunday dinner.
