A Mississippi soldier is receiving the Medal of Honor this afternoon at the White House.

President Barack Obama will present the honor to Kyle Carpenter, who took medical retirement from the Marines last year, for his bravery in Afghanistan on Nov. 21, 2010.

The Jackson native is credited with diving on a grenade to protect a fellow Marine. He was 21 at the time and is 24 now. Carpenter lost an eye and most of his jaw and suffered other major injuries and was virtually given up for dead. But he survived and spent more than two years recovering.

The Medal of Honor is the nation’;s highest military award, given for personal acts of valor that go beyond the call of duty. He becomes the eighth living veteran to receive the award for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
