WEST POINT, MISS. (WCBI)- Hunting season has begun and that means hunters across the area are heading to the woods to bring something home to put in the freezer.
Before those hunters make their way to the outdoors, they first have to attend a Hunter’s Safety Class.
In West Point, the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks hosted the 10-hour class today.
Instructors cover topics from outdoor and hunting safety to first aid and wildlife conservation.
Anyone 10 years of age and older was able to attend the class.
Conservation Officer Marshall McCraw said the goal of the class is to keep hunters safe while doing something they enjoy.
In Mississippi, hunting is very popular and it’s very common for people to take their children hunting. Some children hunt alone and they can from the ages of 12 before they turn 16 with hunter education if the parent or guardian approves of them but by state law they need to have this class to safely hunt alone and have the basics of hunter education and using a bow or a gun and hunting by themselves,” McCraw said.
The class is also available online. You can visit the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Park website to take that course.
