Mississippi Autism Resource Conference

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –  Final preparations are underway for a weekend conference focusing on resources available to parents of autistic children, their caregivers and educators.

The first “Mississippi Autism Resource Conference” takes place Saturday at the Tupelo Country Club.  Workers at the Autism Center of North Mississippi have been busy getting everything ready for the event.

It features speakers and a variety of resources for those whose families are impacted by autism.  Organizers say there are many questions, and misconceptions people have about care available for those with autism.

“Overall I hope these parents can come, ask questions and learn, what might their journey look like and also that they would feel support of the autism center and feel support from other parents,  who maybe are a few years ahead of them,” said Brittany Cuevas, director of the Autism Center of North Mississippi.

“Any questions they may have, or just feeling alone on this journey, that we lift that burden, because sometimes it’s a heavy weight to carry and so we hope when they leave they feel equipped and it’s equipped in a way that’s respectful that allows them to come together with their team and how to move forward,” said Susan Hill, parent of an autistic child.

The conference is full, but another one will take place next year.  The Family Resource Center is funding the event.
