COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- A Mississippi State University student takes home the crown at this years Miss Mississippi USA pageant.
Paromita Mitra, 21, is a bright and beautiful aeronautical engineering major who will soon compete in the upcoming Miss USA Pageant.
When she won Miss Mississippi USA, there was nothing but joy in her eyes.
“It all happened so fast! I almost blacked out! But my family was so happy! I just wanted to see them and thank them!” says Mitra.
Winning Miss Mississippi USA was something she wanted for a very long time.
“I had been preparing since last year when I didn’t win MS Mississippi. I knew that the next year I wanted to come back and represent this great state. And I knew that it was going to take a lot of hard work. I wanted to be completely physically fit, mentally prepared and spiritually ready,” says Mitra.
Mitra is also making history. She was born in Bangladesh, and is the first foreign born woman to win Miss Mississippi USA.
“My family and I moved to America when I was one year old and I got the fortune to grow up in Mississippi. And I couldn’t be more thankful because Mississippi is just such an awesome place to raise a family,” says Mitra.
Mitra says she’s proud to represent the Magnolia State and hopes her story will help others as they strive to overcome life’s obstacles.
“Mississippi really gets a misconception. Just with the name in general. And I feel like immigrants or people who feel like they’re facing adversity in the South or where ever you go…just to overcome it and embrace it and to genuinely be yourself and use that adversity to drive you. I think that’s something really important that I’ve learned and I really appreciate being a different culture and having odds against you! I appreciate it!
After graduating from Mississippi State, Mitra says she wants to work for NASA.
