Video: Memorial Service Held for Fallen Fire Victims

LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – North Mississippians are remembering the two adults and two young children killed in a mobile home fire in Itawamba County earlier this week.

“It’s just devastating,” said family member Elsie Pettigo.

Family and friends looked on as Susan Chilcoat, her daughter Shelby, and Shelby’s two young children were laid to rest.

“It’s horrible,” said family friend Charla Hall. “I just miss them. I didn’t even get to say goodbye.”

Shelby’s boyfriend, Shane Angle, and her sister, Addison, are still in the hospital.

Shelby was just 17 years old. She had her whole life ahead of her.

“[Shelby] had the two-year-old, Anna. She was just the sweetest little thing. She called Shane ‘Daddy.’ She was just like his daughter, so it’s like he’s lost two kids,” Pettigo said.

Family members say Susan was the backbone of their family.

“I’m broken, ’cause my sister [Susan], she was the only one I had, and I want to do what’s right with her,” said family member Michael Hurley. “Take her kids and give them the greatest life, a college education. I want to give them everything, and never forget who their mother was.”

A mother, who Hurley says, loved her children. Now, the family is leaning on their faith to cope with the huge loss.

“God’s got a plan, and he gained angels Tuesday,” Hurley said. “He gained some beautiful angels, and I know they will look over us through these hard times.”
