MDOT Proudly Supports Police, Law Enforcement Officers Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day
JACKSON, Miss. (Press Release) — Police and Law enforcement officers risk their lives on a daily basis to keep citizens safe from crime. National Law Enforcement Officers Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Law Enforcement Officers Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Law Enforcement Officers Week pays a special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting and serving others.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) proudly supports this day and will recognize our law enforcement officers for keeping our communities safe and responding in time of crisis by placing the flag at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on May 15 in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The MDOT Office of Law Enforcement is responsible for enforcing Mississippi’s size, weight and load laws, fuel tax laws, privilege license laws, and the collection of these taxes.
“It’s important that we take the time to remember and honor our fallen officers this week,” said Chief Willie Huff of MDOT’s Enforcement Division. “Please take a moment to say thank you to our law enforcement officers for everything they do on a daily basis.”
