MDOT To Begin Maintenance Projects In Pontotoc, Union Counties

TUPELO, Miss. (MDOT) – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin maintenance projects in Pontotoc and Union Counties on Monday, August 15.

The project in Pontotoc County will be a mill and overlay of approximately 10 miles of State Route 15 from the Chickasaw County line to State Route 41.

The project in Union County will consist of the mill and overlay of approximately three miles of Highway 178, from the New Albany city limits to State Route 15.

“Rehabilitation of pavement is one of our main concerns in District One,” said MDOT District One Engineer Mark Holley. “These maintenance projects will extend the life of the roadway, while also increasing the safety of the traveling public in Pontotoc and Union Counties.”

Construction of both projects will begin on Monday, August 15, and is expected to last until early fall. While construction is taking place, there will be alternating lane closures on State Route 15 in Pontotoc County and State Route 178 in Union County. Flagmen will be present, and motorists are encouraged to obey all advance warning signs, slow down when approaching and traveling through the work zone and avoid distractions, such as texting.

The Union County project will have a nighttime work component on the section of State Route 178 that runs through downtown New Albany.

“As MDOT continues to work with limited available funding for new construction, system preservation projects, like these overlays, become increasingly important in maintaining our infrastructure,” said Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert. “Our number one goal is the safety of the traveling public, and these projects demonstrate that part of MDOT’s mission.”
