MDOC Hiring Officers at Miss. State Penitentiary

JACKSON, Miss. (Press Release) — Individuals  interested in job security and great benefits can consider the field of corrections. Correctional Officer positions are available at the state prison in Sunflower County.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is hiring officers for the Mississippi State Penitentiary (MSP) at Parchman. Interviews and screenings will be conducted Saturday, June 14, at 8:00 a.m. at the prison.

To become a correctional officer, an applicant must be 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license and Social Security card, have no felony or domestic violence conviction, and provide proof of a high school diploma or G.E.D. Applicants must also:

  • Complete a math quiz, a written report and a physical agility exercise, which consists of a one-mile walk or run completed in 30 minutes and a tower climb.
  • Show proof of selective service registration, if a male between the ages of 18-25 years of age.

The benefits of becoming a correctional officer include paid training, medical insurance, life insurance, state retirement, promotional opportunities and an employee recognition program. Starting pay is $1,833.80 per month.

“We’re looking for some ambitious people who want to develop long-term careers,” said MDOC Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps. “I started as a correctional officer 32 years ago. Opportunities abound in this field.”
