JACKSON, Miss. — U.S. Sen John McCain and other supporters of U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran are playing up his support for the military in their push before Tuesday’s Mississippi Republican runoff, when the six-term incumbent faces tea party-backed challenger Chris McDaniel.
McCain, speaking Monday in Jackson, called on other veterans and military members to vote for Cochran, saying the longtime senator has been a steady ally of military spending and readiness.
The Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee says that although he’s fought earmarked spending, he and Cochran have relatively few disagreements, calling him “good and decent and honorable.”
Five prominent Mississippi Republicans — State Auditor Stacey Pickering, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, U.S. Rep Greg Harper, U.S. Sen Roger Wicker and Gov. Phil Bryant – are also renewing their endorsements of Cochran.
