Video: Macon Plant Heavily Damaged by Fire

MACON, Miss. – (WCBI) Fire broke out at a 75 year old Macon treatment plant and according owners there is substantial damage to property there.
The blaze apparently started around 3 pm Friday at Penick Forest Products on Old Highway 45. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene fire could be seen shooting up some 700 feet in the air. Macon Fire Chief Billy Whitehead is not certain what caused the blaze, but witnesses at the plant say it may have been electrical in nature.
“Biggest thing we had to worry about was the smoke, the creosote. Everybody in SBA and air packs, safety percussion there,” says Macon Fire Chief Billy Whitehead.
“Nobody was hurt and we are really thankful for that. We just lost property and that can be replaced,”Gina McLean of Penick Forest Products
Brooksville Fire Department assisted Macon firefighters, the Red Cross was on the scene with hot coffee on a cold day.
