Video: Louisville Parents Upset They Weren’t Notified About School Incidents

LOUISVILLE, Miss. – Some Louisville parents are speaking out. They want to know why the school district didn’t contact them about a couple of incidents at their schools this week.

There were plenty of posts about both incidents online, but school district leaders say they don’t respond to social media. If they allowed it to dictate their actions, school would be interrupted every day.

They also say no children were ever in danger.

“I think the parents should know when something like that goes on,” said parent Stacey McKay.

Parents are talking about an incident at Louisville Elementary this week, where officials say a man was verbally harassing some students while they were playing outside.

Schools officials told WCBI the man was talking to the kids through a fence right next to a play area. They say he was making inappropriate comments to them, and their teacher.

“He was really close to them, and just said some things that gave us a little bit of concern, so we did feel like we needed to turn it over to the authorities,” said Supt. Ken McMullan, Louisville School District.

Then the next day, district leaders say two schools were placed on “practice” lockdown, while Louisville Police searched for a weapon that someone on Facebook mentioned may have been on campus.

Officers didn’t find anything.

“I didn’t even know anything had went on at all,” said parent Christy Billiot. “They usually notify us of every little thing that happens at the high school, and I think they should’ve notified us about a big thing, even if it was practice.”

Parents say they wanted to know about both incidents, even if no one was hurt.

“He didn’t break a law, just inappropriate comments, so what could we report to them?” McMullan said. “We couldn’t report to them anything had been done wrong, we just felt like we need to take extra precautions.”

“Parents definitely should’ve been notified that that happened, ’cause it could have scared the kids. The kids may need some counseling or something, you never know,” Billiot said.

In the case at Louisville Elementary, police say they’re not charging the man with anything, and are still investigating.

Officers say there was also no evidence the man had a gun, despite talks on social media websites.
