Legendary Girls Basketball Coach Stan Hughey Dies
MABEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi has seen one of its basketball coaching legends pass away too soon this weekend.
East Webster High School’s girls basketball head coach Stan Hughey has died. Details on his death are still being confirmed as of Sunday afternoon.
Hughey joined the Wolverines as their new girls basketball head coach this season after spending 20 years at Oak Hill Academy. He helped lead the Lady Raiders to some of their best seasons in school history during his two decades at OHA.
Incidentally, Hughey began his coaching career at Mathiston School, which later combined with Cumberland to form East Webster High School.
“There is never a time you go against Stan Hughey that you know you’re about to be in one of the hardest-fought games you have played,” Starkville Academy head coach Glenn Schmidt said of Hughey to the Commercial Dispatch. “You know when you take the floor he is going to be prepared, that he has watched you, that he will make good decisions about how to play you, and his players are going to play hard and never give up.”
Counselors will be available to students at East Webster at 10:00am Monday.
This story will continued to be updated with details regarding Hughey’s passing. Tune in to WCBI News throughout the week for more.
