Legendary Coach Stallings Speaks On Importance Of Biblical Influence During FCA ‘Breakfast Of Champions’

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – The Good Friday tradition began with prayer and music.

Students and coaches were recognized for their role in promoting FCA on their campuses.
Each week, about 35 hundred students take part in FCA “Huddles,”  or student led devotionals.

“It’s an incredible time to just see youth influencing youth for the gospel,” said District 1 Director, Mark Boren.

Each year, the FCA Breakfast of Champions features a well known figure in the world of sports.

For this breakfast, Former University of Alabama Head Coach, Gene Stallings served as guest speaker.  The 82 year old College Football Hall of Famer talked about his days as a coach at the college and NFL levels, but his main message focused on the important role the FCA plays in the lives of students.

“It’s the only organization in the schools where you can mention the word, Jesus, and that’s a big deal in this part of the time, we have so many people who are against religion,” Coach Stallings said.

Stallings also encouraged those in the audience to support the work of FCA.

“It’s a life changing experience for these youngsters who are members of FCA. Especially the ones who go to camp, and they sit at the foot of Roger Staubach or Raymond Berry, these kind of people for a week,” Stallings said.

Students, coaches and volunteers say they know first hand how FCA is impacting lives.

“We have about 200 people every week.  It makes a big impact,  school is hard these days, and for them to come hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, it lightens up their day, you can see it as they walk out with their smiles on their faces,” said Amory High School Student Jake Watson.

“I became involved in FCA when I was in high school in Illinois , when I played basketball. Got involved in a local huddle, and it really helped me grow in my faith in Christ, helped me become more bold in my witness for Jesus on the campus,” said Jim Brown, an FCA Board member.

“It really impacts student athletes on a new level, it brings all of our sports together and lets us worship together, fellowship together, it’s just a wonderful organization,” said New Albany High School Tennis Coach Suzy Bowman.

FCA is active in about 70 campuses throughout Northeast Mississippi and Alabama.

Nationally, FCA is celebrating 60 years of service and ministry.
