CORINTH, Miss. (AP) – A petition drive has been launched in Corinth for a vote on the legalization of alcoholic beverage sales.
Petition supporter John Orman tells the Daily Corinthian that supporters have launched a web site to promote the petition drive. He says at the site, corinthforavote.com, people can download the petition, which is also being circulated by e-mail and can be found at several businesses.
A new state law changed the eligibility requirements for municipalities that may hold liquor elections.
The law allows cities of more than 5,000 population to hold a liquor referendum if at least 20 percent of the city’s registered voters sign a petition–a number that is between 2,300 and 2,400 in Corinth.
Supporters have not set a timetable on completing the petition drive.
