AMORY, Miss. (WCBI)-The last of the famed Tuskegee Airman from Mississippi has died. Amory native Herbert Carter died at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, where he’d lived for several years. He was 95. Carter retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in 1969 after a distinguished career that began with the Tuskegee Airman in 1941. The airmen gained fame as the first group of black pilots in the U.S. Air Force and their success guarding bombing runs during World War Two across Africa and Europe. He was honored last December with a marker at West Amory Elementary School and a road in Amory is named in his honor. Services are Thursday (11-15) at Tuskegee University in Alabama.
