COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The holiday shopping season officially begins the day “after” Thanksgiving but this year retailers are opening up earlier than expected.
The busiest shopping day of the year is Black Friday but now that day has become Black Thursday.
K-Mart Stores announced that it will open its doors to shoppers at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
“I guess it’s ok but I usually don’t get in the fray. If my wife wants to go and get into that let her do that but I kind of, sort of stay out of it,” says K-Mart shopper, Wendell Dupree.
This year there are only three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and retailers are doing all they can to get consumers in the door.
“That’s fine because people get up early on that morning so they have an opportunity to go shop if they want to so I think it’s cool, ” says Vernell Davis, a K-Mart shopper.
While shoppers may be glad to have the extra time to snatch up good deals, employees won’t get to sleep in Thanksgiving morning. Some shoppers say it may not be fair but it’s business.
“Well if it’s a part of the job, they just have to do it. It’s tough but I guess they just got to do it,” says Dupree.
“The bottom is it’s profit,” says Davis.
K-Mart will remain open for Black Friday shoppers at midnight on Thursday.
