Joyner Area Residents Light Up The Dark To Celebrate Rebuilding
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Tupelo neighborhoods that were hit hard by last year’s tornado were bright this evening.
Nearly 3,000 luminaries were set out and lit up by volunteers, along Clayton Avenue and Joyner Avenue.
The luminaries were originally set to be displayed on the one year anniversary of the tornado, last Tuesday, but the threat of rain cancelled those plans.
Organizers say the luminaries are a great symbol of the work and progress that has taken place with the rebuilding effort in the last year.
“We’ve seen lots of rebuilding and a lot of people getting out and working in their yards and just trying to make their house back, kind of what it was and to make it look as pretty as the neighborhood was before the tornado, so we’re excited to share that with people and we’ve had a good day today getting out with our neighbors and with our friends having a good day today with the luminaries,” said Wendy Frazier, secretary of the Joyner Neighborhood Association.
People were encouraged to drive through the neighborhood to see the luminaries and the difference one year has made in the area.
