Video: Hung Jury in Lowndes Co. Assault Trial

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. – (WCBI) A mistrial is declared in a Lowndes County assault trial where a renter was accused of assaulting her landlord.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the Circuit Court jury split five to seven in the trial of 40-year old Laura Griffin.

Griffin testified that on December 14th of 2009, she acted in self defense against Dean Loftis.

Griffin claims Loftis entered the duplex angry over a message Griffin had left three days earlier about hot water and appliances not working.  Loftis said she simply went to the unit to check on a heater and that Griffin attacked her, even though Loftis says she had the right to enter her property.

No word on a new trial date.
