THRASHER, Miss. (WCBI) — Thrasher has gone through some changes this off season, most notably at the head coaching position.

Head Coach Perry Murphy takes the reigns this week for the Rebels after spending the last three years at Kosciusko as Defensive Coordinator.

After being approved on Monday June 19th for the head coaching job, coach Murphy says that he’s ready to get started.

“It just kind of worked out where I was fortunate enough to get the job. I think were going to have some chance to have a good team. What little I know of our players right now, I think I have a really couple of good players. We really just try to mold each of them into making us become a really good football team,” said head coach Perry Murphy.

The players have had a chance to meet with coach Murphy this week.

They say they are looking forward to having him be their head coach.

“I’ve really liked him so far. He seems like a really great guy. Seems he really teaches us, and really wants to help us improve and get to that next level,” said senior teammate Keaten Fugitt.

“He’s a real good teacher. He’s very approachable. If you need to ask him something you can go right up to him and he’ll give you an answer,” adds another teammate Luke Ballard.

The Rebels finished 4-8 in 2016. The team also hasn’t made the playoffs in over two decades.

Now the team looks forward to a new season.

“I just talk to them, and I can tell they want to be successful. Hopefully we get this thing kind of going and get into the playoffs. Once you get in the playoffs you always have a chance,” Murphy said.

“I’m ready to see what this new coach got in. I’m ready to see the new offense. Looking forward to the new season, and looking forward to the new coach,” said junior Shawn Dalton Weatherbee.

“I can’t wait to get my senior season started. I think we are going to be something special this year, and the work ethic this year I think will be really good for us,” Fugitt said.

“I’m super excited. It being my senior year, I wish football started today. I just love it. It’s a sport that’s deep into my family,” Ballard adds.

Coach Murphy coached at Mount Olive high school from 2009 to 2013.

After being away from head coaching the last three years, he says he’s glad to be back in Northeast Mississippi.

“Fun being back in back in Northeast Mississippi. I’ll see some guys that I use to coach against probably twenty years ago. I’m looking forward to seeing some of these guys I hardly ever see anymore,” Murphy said.

Thrasher will open the 2017 season at home against New Site on August 18th.
