NANIH WAIYA, Miss. (WCBI) — A storm is coming.
The highest scoring team in all of Class 1A is back and even scarier than ever.
Nanih Waiya averaged a lethal 45 points per game during their 2016 campaign, where the Warriors won their third straight district championship. And with what’s returning, there could be history in the making.
“We have a lot of good players coming back,” head coach Ryan Keeton said. “We lost a lot of good ones but when you have quality skill guys that we have coming back I’m excited to see how they’ve progressed.”
“We have the two best players in the state,” senior Bryce Stanton said. “We’re working hard every day and we’ll be good.”
Those two players are Thunder & Lightning: Taemaus Glass and Chris Smith.
Nanih Waiya has all the talent to be a force once again in 2017 as the Warriors will lean on their dynamic duo.
“He has the speed and I bring the power,” Glass said.
“When we’re coming, no one can stop us.” Smith said. “Taemaus, he’s up there blocking and running people over. Then I come in and out-run people. We’re so athletic.”
The storm is indeed coming for the rest of 1A, but the Warriors have yet to break through and win the school’s first football State Championship.
This year, Nanih Waiya believes it is their year to finish it off the right way.
“That’s all that gets talked about around here is going to State,” Keeton said. “We don’t talk about it. When I hear my kids talk about it, I try to squash it pretty quick. I don’t want them to get caught up in the destination that they don’t enjoy the journey.”
“I want to get to December and play for a State Championship,” Glass said. “We aren’t talking about it a lot because you have to grind to get there.”
“All 3 years we come up short in south state,” Smith said. “I want to get past that hill. Sometimes, we get to lacking and we give up a little bit. This year it won’t happen.”
Nanih Waiya will begin the season on the road at Hatley before finishing up the month of August at home versus Union.
