STEENS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus Christian looks to end a two year playoff drought and get back into the winning column in 2017.
The Rams lose 4 seniors from a team that went 3-7 in 2016, but they have experience back with 4 starters on offense and defense.
Columbus Christian looks forward to the upcoming season.
“Definitely we’ve been working hard this summer,” said senior quarterback Nate Parker. “I’m just ready.”
“I’m very excited because I just want to play my senior year with my guys,” adds teammate Kelvin Mitchell. “I just want to see us win.”
“This year we are probably going to be a lot smaller,” said head coach Greg Watkins. “It’s probably going to be the smallest team I’ve coached since I’ve been here, but we are going to be quicker I think.”
New foes and new competition is what the Rams will see this fall.
Columbus Christian drops into a new region in single A.
The Rams will also have seven seniors leading the team, and one of the seniors that coach Watkins will rely on is his starting quarterback Nate Parker.
“Dropping down a classification is really going to help this group because we’re young,” Watkins said. “Nate stepped in when Dawson got hurt, and did a great job. He’s been at every work out, and he’s going to be our team leader.”
The Rams have set the bar high this season for their expectations. The expectations for them is to make the playoffs.
“I’ve never played in a playoff game,” Parker said. “I missed it my ninth grade year we went, but I was hurt.”
“They’re determined to want to get into the playoffs,” Watkins adds. “We won a few state champions in different things the last couple of years. These kids have been apart of that. The desire to get there in football and getting the big picture in football is there.”
Columbus Christian gets their season underway on August 18th when they host Porter’s Chapel Academy.
