Hospitalized Inmates Back in Leake Co. Prison
LEAKE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — All nine Mississippi inmates injured during a fight at the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility earlier this month are back behind bars.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections says three of those inmates who had been hospitalized since the July 10 disturbance were released this week.
Corrections officials say the Leake County prison has been on lockdown since fighting broke out in one of the housing units.
Investigators say two rival gangs got into a fight in connection with an attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison.
The prison has suspended four correctional officers suspected of being involved.
Officials are still investigating.
