WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – Shopping for clothes might be easy but shopping for your first home can be tricky. Saturday morning dozens of folks came out for a home buyers workshop in West Point.
Potential homeowners learned about the home-buying process from start to finish. The seminar focused on loan and credit requirements, maintaining your property as well as the pros and cons of owning a home. The event was a joint venture between the University of Southern Miss, real estate agent Virginia Burchfield and the City of West Point. Support Counselor Heather Steele says the community needs to be educated about home ownership.
“It’s very important for people to know what the home buying process is so that they can be successful homeowners. We have a high foreclosure rate and we want people to be able to maintain and sustain themselves,” says Steele.
Tyeisha Moore attended the workshop and says becoming a home owner will benefit the next generation of her family.
“I just want to have something that I can leave to my children in case anything happens to me. I don’t want to worry about rent and calling landlords when I can take care of things myself.
