Highway Dedication Set For Long-time Politician
OKOLONA, Miss. (AP) – A stretch of highway in northeast Mississippi will be formally dedicated Wednesday for the late state Sen. Jack Gordon.
The ceremony will dedicate part of Mississippi Highway 245 in Chickasaw County as the Carl J. “Jack” Gordon Jr. Memorial Highway. It is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the City Auditorium on Main Street in Okolona.
The portion of the highway goes from the city limits of Gordon’s hometown, Okolona, northward to the Lee County line.
Gordon, a Democrat, began his legislative career in the Mississippi House, where he served from 1972 to 1980.
He served in the Senate from 1980 to 1992, and again from 1996 until his death in May 2011. Gordon chaired the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee from 1988 to 1992 and again from 2000 to 2008.
