SULLIGENT, Ala. (WCBI) – Sulligent high school went 3-7 last season, and did not make the playoffs. The Blue Devils remember their three losses where they came within one touchdown.
“We had some close games that we couldn’t just pull out of the bag,” junior lineman Lucas Reeves said. “We had an overtime loss. We’re going to try and fix them this year.”
And the players are putting high expectations on themselves for this season.
“Our goals are high,” Reeves said. “Every year they get higher and higher. We look to do the best we can and win every game.”
“There’s a lot on everybody’s shoulders,” senior running back Jamar Plant said. “We’ve got a lot to prove to the community. You know, last season wasn’t the best season, so this season we have to show them what Blue Devil pride really is.”
Keep in mind, Sulligent only returns seven starters. There will be a lot of young players for Head Coach Scott Marchant to bring up to speed.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys who have been out of football for a while but they’re working hard and we’re expecting big things out of them,” Marchant said. “They’re on a learning curve right now but if they work hard they can get there.”
Junior Nathan Gardner will be the Blue Devils’ QB.
“He’s going to be really good for us. He’s working hard,” Marchant said. He’s got a lot of tools. We’ve just got to focus him in the right direction and put him in the right situations so his talent can come out and I think he’ll do fine.”
