SHANNON, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – Shannon High School as reached the 4A playoffs the past two seasons despite having a losing record each of the last two years. Head Coach Darryl Carter returns 18 seniors and 14 starters to this year’s Red Raiders squad.
“A lot of guys we’ve got confidence in we’re leaning on the seniors this year. We didn’t have many seniors last year and it being my first year, we were just trying to get some kinks out. I’m excited where we are right now we had a good spring and everybody right now to this point is healthy,” head coach Darryl Carter said.
An ACL injury kept Kendall Cox off the field last season. He’s fully recovered and going to be the quarterback this year, but you wouldn’t know it if you saw him. He’s 6-1 250 pounds. He says coach Carter told him to try out the QB position.
It’ll be a spread offense for the Red Raiders and Cox will get plenty of chances to run the ball.
“For him, we’re still going to be uptempo, running what we run, but he’s very smart. I’m just looking for our guy to protect the ball, make smart decisions and keep us on the field as an offense,” Carter said.
The defense will be faster and smarter Carter says. And his coaching philosophy is to keep things simple.
“My thing is I just try and make it simple for the guys. I know a lot of X’s and O’s, different ways to do it but at the end of the day if we don’t simplify it for the kids to understand, it’s very difficult. So the main thing is I’m just very simple, basic and to the point,” Carter said.
