Hattiesburg High School Senior Takes Top Prize In Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club Scholarship Competition

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A senior from Hattiesburg High School is the winner of this year’s Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club Music Scholarship competition.

Eighteen year old Emmie Perkins beat out nine other finalists for the annual talent search and scholarship contest.

Emmie wins a 5 thousand dollar scholarship from the Tupelo Elvis Fan Club.  The contest began twelve years ago as a way to highlight young talent from across Mississippi.

“When we started out twelve years ago, the winner got one thousand dollars, now the winner gets five thousand dollars, it’s a big scholarship now and they can use it for their college, and for other areas that will advance their education,” said Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club President Bill Monaghan.

“I’m very surprised, I was shocked, there’s a lot of  great people that were such amazing performers, singers and dancers and I’m humbled to be next to them and get to perform with them, it was a lot of fun.  In the future I will go to Mississippi State, Go Dawgs, and majoring in pre med science, minoring in music and I hope to be the first singing doctor,” said Emmie Perkins, winner of the $5,000 scholarship.

More than 50 entries were received from across the state.   There are prizes for the top four contestants.   The Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club is able to help many charities through the sale of specialty car tags benefiting the fan club.
