Video: Gun Dealers Gearing Up For ‘Second Amendment Tax Free Weekend’

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — It is a big weekend for outdoorsmen throughout Mississippi.  Dove season begins Friday. And for the second year in a row, many hunting items can be bought tax free. WCBI’s Allie Martin visits one store to see how they’re preparing.

Wesley Webb takes a few minutes out of a busy day with Mossy Oak Properties, to stop in at Hunter’s Haven.

He’s looking for a gun to put on layaway for the upcoming Second Amendment Tax Free Weekend.

“I’ve got several different guns I would like to have and I’m just shopping a bit,” Webb said.

Webb eventually settled on a pistol.

“In my line of business, sometimes you go in some empty houses and stuff like that and you like to have something with you,” he said.

When he buys the 9 milimeter this weekend, he won’t have to pay any taxes.

Mississippi’s Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday begins Friday at midnight and runs through Sunday night.

Hunter’s Haven Owner George Partlow has been stocking the shelves and aisles, preparing for the shopping rush.

“All your guns, any type of firearm, ammo, gun accessories, basically all that is tax free, and all archery, bows, crossbows, arrows, anything to do with archery is tax free,” Partlow said.

Hunter’s Haven will pay taxes on clothing, boots and shoes, as a sign of customer appreciation.

Last year’s sales tax holiday was so overwhelming, Hunter’s Haven added this parking lot and it’s expected to be full. The store is also doubling their staff but encourages customers to be patient.

“It takes awhile to do your gun checks and all that stuff and this weekend all the FBI stuff probably will be backed up and it just takes a little time,” Partlow explained.

The wait for background checks may be easier to endure, once customers see their receipt.

For expensive purchases, like rifles and shotguns,  it could mean hundreds of dollars in savings and it helps the store’s bottom line.

“It’s a good shot in the arm, it gives us some revenue we wouldn’t normally get, and it’s our bill paying time, so it really coincides and it’s good for everybody,” Partlow said.

Hunter’s Haven will expand its store hours to be open on Sunday.
