Former NFL player hosting sports camp for area youth
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – An NFL alumnus will host a camp emphasizing skills that young people can use in sports and life.
The Eric Matthews Youth and Moms Camp is set for June 10 at Robins Field in Tupelo. Matthews, who won the championship with the Green Bay Packers, will be joined by other former NFL players, along with area coaches and volunteers.
The free camp will teach the fundamentals of football, along with a huddle time where life skills will also be taught and shared with the young people.
“It is a labor of love for us to what we’re doing. I feel like we become a little reactive when things happen, kids get in trouble, drugs are introduced, violence, and bad decisions facing kids at a younger age, a lot of times we become reactive. So we found maybe on the front end we as mentors, pour into the kids some virtues they need. We hope to curb some issues facing some of our bigger close cities like Memphis and other places,” said Anthony Mitchell, camp host.
“My dad has done these camps ever since I was born. I’ve been to pretty much every single one of them, and have a lot of fun. These camps have a good influence on me, teaching me how to work hard, play hard,” said Palmer Mitchell, camp participant.
More than 200 kids are signed up, but there are still spots open. For more information, visit the-endzone-club.com It all starts at 9 a.m. at Robins Field.
