Former MHP Trooper and Former MHP Director Settle Abuse Suit

TUPELO, MS (WCBI) – Five North Mississippi residents have settled an excessive force suit against former MHP Trooper Chris Hughes and the Former Director of the Mississippi Highway Patrol Mike Berthay.   The state agreed to pay $235,000 dollars to the people who all claimed they were beaten by former trooper Chris Hughes starting back in 2007.   Berthay was named in the lawsuit because he viewed videotapes of one of the first beatings but did nothing to discipline him and allowed him to remain on the force.   Attorney Jim Waide who represented the plaintiffs says the abuse began because Hughes and others on the patrol all began heavy steroid use and Hughes suffered from fits of rage because  of the steroid use.   Hughes pleaded guilty in 2013 to federal criminal charges and was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison.
