CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) — The annual Egg Bowl college football classic between Ole Miss and Mississippi State is rich in tradition.
Now, ROTC cadets at the two schools have started a new one.
Today, cadets from the two schools started the Egg Bowl “Game Ball” run, taking a football from Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze in Oxford to MSU Coach Dan Mullen in Starkville.
It’s a project that’s been a year in the making with a good cause in the end.
“We heard of other schools doing this with their rivals, so why can’t we do this? It’s good for school publicity, good camaraderie with the MSU cadets,” explained Ole Miss Battalion Commander John Balding.
“It actually came about last year. Some cadets thought up the idea, it just couldn’t work out last year, they couldn’t get all the coordination done. So one of the first priorities this year was to put it all together and here we are,” added Lt. Col. Brian Locke with the MSU group.
The two sets of runners hooked up in Calhoun City for the ceremonial exchange and communities along the way offered encouragement and support for their schools and the cause.
“The game ball that they are bringing is going to be signed by both coaches, both athletic directors, both sergeants from the ROTC and it’s going to be bid up after the game Thursday night with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Fund,” explained Calhoun City Chamber Director Laura Edwards.
