Florida Sweeps MSU Baseball Team Over Super Bulldog Weekend
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI Sports / MSU Athletics) – It’s not the result the Mississippi State baseball team was looking for during the heavily attended games over Super Bulldog Weekend.
The Bulldogs’ offense couldn’t keep up with No. 6 Florida Sunday as the Gators won 10-5 to complete the series sweep. It marked the first time in 23 SEC home series that MSU has lost all three games at Dudy Noble Field.
Florida compiled 12 hits and scored in five different innings.
“I’m a believer in breaks in baseball,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “You have to create your own breaks and we aren’t doing that right now.”
And there were some close calls offensively, according to Cohen.
“We could have easily scored eight or nine runs,” Cohen said. “Right now, it’s not happening for this team for whatever reason.”
Florida improved to 31-10 overall and 12-6 in the SEC, while MSU fell to 22-19 and 6-12 in SEC play.
“We are going to keep competing and working at it. We just have to find a way to do a few things better. We aren’t that far off.”
Down 3-0 in the fourth, MSU battled back to tie with two runs in the fourth inning and another score in the fifth inning. In the fourth inning, Jake Vickerson singled and that was followed by a two-run home run from Gavin Collins. An inning later, Brent Rooker doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Gridley. MSU finished with nine hits. Vickerson, Rea and Rooker each had multiple hits.
Florida’s Taylor Lewis (2-1) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of relief work, behind starter Alex Fadeo and Danny Young. Austin Sexton (3-4) worked into the sixth inning and took the loss for the Bulldogs.
