Video: Flood Waters Taken Over The Amory Community

[syndicaster id=’6142047′] AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Flooded waters in creeks and rivers. That’s been the biggest issue for the majority of the Monroe County area on Friday. The city of Amory is one dealing with flooding concerns. Some people have had to evacuate their homes. One family that our WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo spoke with says they are really lucky that none of the water came into their home, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have some clean up on Saturday.

Amory Residents Sherman and Elmina Johnson and their children have been living in the Amory community for the last six years and haven’t seen anything like what happened on Friday with the flooding that occurred.

“It started early in the morning, but it was about lunch time by the time it was out on the road so about ninety-five percent of the yard was covered with water,” said Amory Resident Elmina Johnson.

“The way the water was backing up, the water wouldn’t hardly drain out of the sink in our kitchen so all the front was flooded out and it got pretty rough their for a while,” said Amory Resident Sherman Johnson.

With the water finally decreasing a little on Saturday for the Johnson family, they were doing their best to try an save their pecans.

“Trying to save them and if they get too wet they will spoil and it wouldn’t be no good,” Johnson said.

“With water levels expected to rise over the next few days E-M-A Director Bunky Goca says he urges viewers not to drive through the water until the water has decreased,” said WCBI News Reporter Jonathan Flippo.

“People are driving through these flooded areas that don’t understand the severity of the strength of the water. It could very easily pick-up a car and float it off in the ditch and prospectively injuring yourself or a victim with yourself, so turn around don’t drive,” said Monroe County E-M-A Director Bunky Goca.

More rain is expected Sunday and Monday, so your best bet is to stay off the flooded roads.
