Four apartment units catch fire in South Columbus, no injuries reported

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus Fire had their hands full on Wednesday, as four apartments went up in smoke.

Around noon, 6 trucks and just under 30 firefighters responded to 16th Avenue South for the fire call.

Luckily, only one person was home at the time.

No injuries have been reported.

The incident remains under investigation.

“My life’s been shook upside down. I had left home for a while for the day, got a phone call that my apartment was on fire. I had just laid out a new set of clothes that I was going to put on for tomorrow and take care of a little business, but everything is gone now,” said Darnell Perkins, who lost a home.

The apartments are managed by the city of Columbus Housing Authority.

Housing Authority officials say they gave vacant units to accommodate 3 of the 4 families. They’re asking for the public’s help with other personal needs.

You can donate items like clothing, beds, furniture, food, toiletries, sheets, towels, etc.
