STEENS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lowndes County family believes a man who fought in World War I is buried underneath their home, and they’re looking for his family.
The tombstone has been there since Annie Davis and her family built their house in 1980, and why it’s there remains a mystery.
“I don’t know who he is, where he come from, or nothing,” Davis said. “All I know is he’s out there.”
Davis’ daughter, Edna Hairston, lives nearby, and now wants to learn more about Robert Duvall – the soldier, not the actor.
All she knows is what’s on his marker. He was born in 1894, and fought in World War I.
She believes he’s buried there, but she doesn’t know for sure.
“From the way the headstone sits, it could be,” Hairston said. “I know if it was my dad or my brother, and I didn’t know where they were, I would like to know.”
She doesn’t know any of his family members, and this is the only grave she’s seen in the area.
“We just want to find out if there’s someone out there that knows who Robert Duvall is,” she said. “If so, you’re welcome to contact us, and maybe let’s dig up and see if he’s still there.”
And although the house sits on top of someone’s grave, both Davis and Hairston say it doesn’t bother them. Even if it may seem kind’ve spooky.
“Well, you do sometimes hear footsteps in the hallway, and you get up and look and there’s nobody there,” Hairston said.
It’s a way Duvall may be reminding them, he’s still there. And Hairston says he’ll continue to have a home there, like he has for the past 46 years.
