EMCC Football Earns Two Players of the Week
SCOOBA, Miss. (WCBI/EMCC Athletics) – For their respective efforts during last week’s 46-10 home win over then-No. 3 Copiah-Lincoln, sophomore linebacker Justin Lucas and freshman running back/kick returner DJ Law of the top-ranked East Mississippi Community College football team have been accorded Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Player of the Week recognition.
A middle linebacker from Aberdeen, Lucas earned defensive honors after recording 15 total tackles with 10 solo stops and five assists during the Lions’ 36-point victory over Co-Lin a week ago. The former Aberdeen High School product was also credited with two sacks for 14 yards in addition to a pair of quarterback hurries against the Wolfpack.
For the season, Lucas currently leads the EMCC Lions with 21 total stops, including 14 solo tackles and seven assists.
Law, a first-year player from Haines City, Fla., received special teams recognition after averaging 47.3 yards on four kickoff returns versus Copiah-Lincoln during last week’s MACJC inter-divisional showdown between the NJCAA’s No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams at the time. Along with kickoff returns of 64, 51, 45 and 29 yards, the freshman speedster also rushed for 62 yards on 11 carries against Co-Lin to account for 251 all-purpose yards.
On the year, Law is presently ranked second nationally among NJCAA kick returners with 231 total kickoff return yards along with an average of 46.2 yards per return.
EMCC’s Lucas and Law, as well as MACJC offensive honoree Jason Smith of Mississippi Gulf Coast, are now nominated for national honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Following non-divisional victories over Co-Lin and Southwest Mississippi (52-14) to kick off their current slate, head coach Buddy Stephens’ 2-0 EMCC Lions begin MACJC North Division play Thursday evening at Coahoma Community College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at James E. Miller Stadium in Clarksdale.
