CUMBERLAND, Miss. (WCBI) —  2015 was a history making season for the East Webster Wolverines.

Since making the jump up to 2-A in 2009, East Webster was without a return trip to the State Championship.

That all changed this past year, as the Wolverines were back playing for “The Title”.

But this year’s team will look quite a bit different than the one that was one of the last two standing in 2-A.

“This team this year just has a completely different personality”, said head coach Doug Wilson.

“They’re a little more finesse than the old blue collar teams we’ve had in the past couple years. They’re a talented team in the receiving corp for sure. We look like we may be able to throw the ball a little bit more than we’ve been normally. A new quarterback, a new running back, so they got to get time, game-rep time. I think this group has a completely different personality. They’re a unique group, fun to be around.”

It is a stout senior class of 17 Wolverines that departs and head coach Doug Wilson has looked to a new group of upperclassmen to take on the role of leading the 2016 East Webster Wolverines.

“You just got to grow up”, said Darius Bryant, “We just have to have faith in the seniors this year, just be a better team.”

“It’s been a bit different for me and a bunch of new seniors coming up, not having those guys around….”, said Antaurayon Johnson, “…But we’re the leaders now so we have to step up and do our thing.”

“…We knew, this group of seniors, we really had to come out and get these guys up because there’s been a lot this year that didn’t really play last year but we know they can step up and play”, said Luke Wilson, “Just leading them to get in the game and really get some time in, that’s what we need most.

Getting a taste of playing in last year’s State Title game has the Wolverines looking for more in 2016.

While East Webster may not have the big names like Jack Wilson or Chase Keller from a season ago, it is still a strong and rugged group that wants to play for all the marbles once more.

“Everyone knows there’s one goal, and we really want to work for that this year”, Luke Wilson said, “We kind of ended bad last year, but we know we want to work back to that.”

“It comes to mind, a lot”, said Bryant, “We just got to work back to that and everything will be fine.”

“What that was, it was a super awesome experience, but, you know, this year our goals are a little different, sort of shortened our goals”, the head coach said, “We really have to perform well at home and hopefully get out of that non-division schedule injury free.”

The Wolverines will start the season on the road at Vardaman before wrapping up the month of August at home against Noxapater.
