East Union’s Tray Davis Signs with Northeast Baseball
BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WCBI/NEMCC Athletics) – Word of mouth has helped the Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball program pick up another highly talented local athlete for its 2014-15 signing class.
Tray Davis became the newest Tiger when he inked with the defending Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division champions during National Signing Day.
“We’re looking forward to him coming in,” said Northeast head coach Kent Farris. “Tray is versatile, but we’re looking at him being an outfielder for us.”
Davis consulted his former East Union High School teammates and current Tigers Cody Bo Dillard and Dustin Pratt when making the choice of where to continue his career on the diamond at.
He was impressed by what the one-time Urchin duo disclosed about Northeast’s facilities and the squad itself.
“I just wanted to come up here from the good things they said,” Davis said. “They said they have a good coaching staff, a great field and that the campus is just unbelievable.”
The senior from Blue Springs was a key part of the 2013 East Union team that advanced to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 2A championship series against Taylorsville High School at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
Davis saw action in all 38 games for the Urchins as a junior and batted .359 with 42 hits in 117 at bats. He scored 24 times and had a team-high 39 RBIs to lead East Union at the plate.
He held a .410 on-base percentage and .487 slugging percentage with nine doubles and two home runs. Davis had four sacrifice flies, twelve walks and struck out just 18 times in 134 appearances.
Davis recorded a handful of memorable performances during the 2013 campaign, including the initial four-hit outing of his career in a MHSAA Division 1, Class 2A win against Baldwyn High School.
He rose to the occasion during the 2013 MHSAA Class 2A North Half playoffs. Davis was 12 of 32, a .375 average, with three doubles, six runs scored and 15 RBIs in a 10-game stretch to assist the Urchins in clinching their first berth to the state title series since 2007.
Entering the 2014 season, Davis has participated in 74 contests and is a two-year starter for coach Chris Basil. His overall statistics include some notable figures, including a .410 batting average and .469 on-base percentage.
The 6-1, 195 pounder has 86 total hits, 25 of them for extra bases, with 69 RBIs and 54 runs scored. He also fields the ball well with 54 putouts, six assists and only six errors in his prep career.
Davis is relieved to have this important decision out of the way so he can focus on having a successful final year as an Urchin.
“It just takes a lot of the pressure away from me so I don’t have to worry about it,” he said. “It’s just a blessing to be here in this atmosphere.”
Davis was a member of the East Union basketball team that qualified for the MHSAA Class 2A postseason in both of his varsity campaigns as well.
The guard appeared in nearly 60 contests and averaged 6.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 0.3 steals and 0.1 blocks per game in a pair of seasons on the court.
Davis also took to the gridiron and was a part of East Union’s first ever winning football season in 2013. He played a pivotal role in the Urchins’ initial playoff triumph in school history with 13 tackles against H.W. Byers High School.
