BLUE SPRINGS, Miss. (WCBI) — East Union is quickly becoming a football program on the rise.

The school has invested in their new team with a new stadium & new field house. Those new additions are helping nurture a culture of hard work and determination that is making the Urchins a tough, hard-nosed bunch.

“We have great kids here,” head coach Kevin Walton said. “They work hard in the weight room. For the most part, they’re showing up this summer.

“We’ll be young. We had a lot of 9th graders starting for us last year. They’ll play key roles for us this year. And we’re trying to seal our quarterback spot. We’re not definite there yet. When we seal that up, we’ll get to the area where we need to be successful.”

For a school that is still new to the football field, East Union is getting accustomed to the spotlight quickly.

The Epic Urchins have clinched a playoff birth in two of the school’s first 4 football seasons. This year, to make it back to the playoffs like they did in 2015, they will look to their senior leaders for guidance.

“We have a bigger group of seniors this year,” Walton said. “We have 8 seniors and they’ll all play key roles. I think their leadership and work ethic feeds off to the younger guys. That’ll be key to our success.”

The town and the community of Blue Springs is still with heavy hearts after the passing of TJ Hamblin last August.

Head coach Kevin Walton has his team with shirts that read “Lay it On the Line for 99”. They will continue to devote to play for their fallen friend who has inspired a new guideline that the team must follow.

“We have the TJ rule we abide by,” coach Walton said. “It’s about showing up and being here. We always remember him when we do that. The guys love him and they’ll play with him on their hearts. He was a great kid and his work ethic and always being here. He never missed. This would be his senior year. The senior group was close to him. He hasn’t been forgotten.”

And with TJ looking down from the best seat in the house, the Urchins plan to make this year the best yet on the gridiron.
