TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A 28 year old Tupelo man will spend ten years in prison for DUI death after he plead guilty earlier this month.
Wednesday morning, John Gillentine was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with ten suspended.Gillentine admitted that he ran over retired teacher Betty Montgomery as she walked along a Tupelo street during her daily morning walk back in August 2013.

The brief sentencing hearing included emotional victims statements from several of Montgomery’s family members.District Attorney Trent Kelly said the case sends a strong message for those who decide to drink and drive.

“Whether it’s a series of bad decisions or one bad decision, it does not matter, if you’re impaired and you’re driving and you kill someone you will go to jail and it doesn’t matter whether you meant to or not.”

Gillentine will be on five years probation after his release.He could have been sentenced up to a maximum of 25 years for DUI death.
