Dickie Scruggs Released To Home Confinement

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Disbarred Mississippi attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs is back at home in Oxford.

Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke says Scruggs was released to home confinement on March 20. He says the expectation is that Scruggs will remain on home confinement until his release date after serving time in a federal prison in Montgomery, Ala., for a judicial corruption conviction.

The 67-year-old Scruggs was sentenced to seven years in 2009 for allegedly influencing former Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter in a civil lawsuit.

Prosecutors say Scruggs told DeLaughter that he would recommend the judge for an appointment to the federal bench in return for a favorable ruling in a court case.

DeLaughter pleaded guilty in 2009 to obstruction of justice. He’s out of prison

Scruggs’ release date is Sept. 14.
