Day in the Life, “Palmer Hope Nursery”
COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. The leaders at Palmer Home for children believe in that old proverb.
Mary Tuggle knows her way around a green house. With 23-years of experience, Mary is now teaching the finer points of gardening. For the last 11-years, she has worked with teenagers at the nursery, located on the campus of the Palmer Home for Children. Teaching those teens could be considered walk in a garden row compared to teaching me. We began with a row of salad tomatoes.
We then planted several rows of yellow squash. We are approaching the winter months, but these veggies will be protected. That’s because this portable frame will soon be covered, creating solar heat. Vegetables aren’t the only things growing at the greenhouse. They are already getting ready for Christmas with their budding poinsettias. For Mary Tuggle, teaching the youth of the Golden Triangle the roots of basic gardening and food production is just one more day in the life. The Palmer Hope Nursery is open Monday -Friday from 8am-5pm, located ON 11th Ave. South IN COLUMBUS.
Right now, Mums are for sale as well as fall bedding and decorative plants including: flowering cabbage and kale, assorted POTS, snapdragons, pansies and more.
