COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The sign has been lighting up Highway 45 in Columbus since August.
Krispy Kreme and its “HOT, FRESH” guarantee keeps customers lining up for the treat that comes in dozens.
Billy Dorgan Jr., is continuing on a sweet family legacy. After recently opening the Krispy Kreme in Columbus, the father of four splits his time between his stores in both Hattiesburg and the Friendly City.
His father is also in the donut business and has watched the line-up expand to include 15 different types of sweet treats. They’ve even embraced the Halloween spirit with some spooktacular designs.
“Spider webs, pumpkin shapes and pumpkin spice. The pumpkin spice has been around for a number of years. It is extremely popular this time of year,” says Dorgan.
After watching the process through the doughnut theatre, it was time to get to work. I put on my hat, apron and gloves to help with the afternoon rush.
“Doughnuts are fried at 360 degrees for 110 seconds. As they travel through, the heat and humidity allows the dough to rise. They are cooked on both sides, so the halfway point is called the flipper. From the customer perspective, the best part is seeing it go through the glaze,” says Dorgan.
Ah yes, the glaze. It’s the best part. To find out how its made you’ll have to wait for next Thursday to roll around, until then this has been just one more day in the life.
