COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Columbus Police Department responded to a call at the Colonade Apartments about a possible explosive device at 10:31 Friday (8/31) morning.
Officers blocked off the area to search the premises. Officers did detect several plastic bottles some had been exploded and others had not. The bottles are said to have winter green alcohol and bleach which creates a chemical reaction that causes a minor explosion. The explosion can cause burns and serious damage to the person if held when it explodes, but it is not enough to damage buildings or cars. Officers say this may be young kids pulling a prank, but the charges could be serious of the culprit is found. “What we are thinking that it’s probably some backyard chemist that looked on the website and found out a way to make more of a bang then actually a bomb, but however it is a very serious charge and they could be charged with making a bomb or possession of an explosive device,” says Police Captain Freddrick Shelton.
Police say if you suspect anyone of making these explosives or see any in your area do not touch the bottle and contact your local police immediately.
