COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A day of giving is how a Sherman restaurant spent its day.
Cravin’ Catfish held its 7th annual free Thanksgiving lunch for those who might not have had a Thanksgiving meal.
More than 30 trays of dressing, turkey, and pies lined up on a table as people waited to fill their plates and stomachs.
Owner Gerald Hegan says the idea of doing this came to him because of one reason.
“God. He blessed us with the abundance, the restaurant, the big building, lots of customers, we just felt very blessed, and we just felt like we need to do something for him, in his name.”
Cravin’ Catfish had more than 30 volunteers that helped cook, fix plates, and clean up. The volunteers looked at volunteering as mission work and said the feeling of giving their time is a rewarding feeling.
“They have no where to go, and the family won’t be there for them and they can come in here and have a good meal, and fellowship with people around here. It’s you know, just a blessing. I mean to you, to see that and see a smile on their face and some of these people will have a good meal, and that smile makes it worth all.”
Cravin’ Catfish customer, Mamie Bryant, thinks that if the restaurant didn’t provide the free lunch than many people wouldn’t have had the chance to celebrate the holiday.
“Their doing a wonderful thing because there’s probably a lot of people here that might not would have had Thanksgiving dinner if they, especially this much food and variety of food.”
This is Mamie Byrant’s 99th Thanksgiving and her third one to spend at the restaurant. She says that the food is important but not as important as this.
“Well it means most of all family, health and I have both so I’m very thankful for that.”
