Coroner: Alabama siblings killed by Amtrak train at crossing
LIPSCOMB, Ala. (AP) – Authorities in Alabama say a pair of elderly siblings died when a passenger train smashed into their car at a railroad crossing.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates on Friday identified the victims as 77-year-old Lepoleon Mixon and 83-year-old Odell Smith. Al.com reports relatives told police that Mixon was taking his sister to a doctor’s appointment when the crash happened Wednesday near the city limits dividing Lipscomb from Birmingham.
Yates said none of the 60 passengers aboard the Amtrak train were injured. It was heading from New York to New Orleans. He said the crossing rails and signals were working and witnesses reported Mixon tried to cross the tracks in spite of the warning signals.
Yates said the crash remains under investigation by Lipscomb police and Amtrak officials.
