Corinth Eyes Pay Raises, Street Work
By The Associated Press
CORINTH, Miss. (AP) — City employees would get a pay raise under a budget proposal discussed this past week by the Corinth Board of Aldermen.
The Daily Corinthian reported the board also plans street improvements in the 2014 budget.
The aldermen may adopt the budget after further discussion at a meeting this coming week.
The budget envisions a pay raise of 3 percent or 30 cents an hour, whichever is greater for Corinth employees. City employees got a raise last year in the amount of 5 percent or 50 cents an hour.
The proposed millage rate, including the school tax, is unchanged at 95 in the current budget proposal.
The city plans a $1.6 million bond issue that would not require a tax increase and would help to fund infrastructure projects.
Mayor Tommy Irwin said aldermen would have $100,000 to spend in each of Corinth’s five wards on paving of streets. Some work on curbs, gutters and sidewalks and installation of upscale street lighting is also possible.
The city is also considering a low-interest loan to pay the $1 million match required for a $4.1 million Economic Development Administration grant that will be used for drainage improvements.
