Community collaborations ensure Thanksgiving donations for those in need

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – During the season of thanks, two turkeys will receive a get out of jail, or oven, free card.

Community partnerships are ensuring locals don’t go without during Thanksgiving.

The city of Columbus is partnering with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the Community Benefit Committee, and the Salvation Army to take in turkey donations.

The Salvation Army kicked off its Red Kettle initiative and the city opened up a can drive.

The goal is for everyone, including the two turkeys, to be happy for Thanksgiving.

“One turkey is named Tim. He’s back for a second pardon this year. The second turkey is named George. He’s asking for his first pardon. So, the way we do this is one turkey gets a pardon from the city and one turkey gets a pardon from the county,” said Mayor Keith Gaskin.

November 17 is the last day to donate a turkey.
